HONOURING: Maarika Paul
Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial and Operations Officer at CDPQ
Type 1 and 2 diabetes have both had an impact on two of my loved ones.
My father was first to be diagnosed. He suffered greatly from diabetes, including enduring multiple amputations and going blind.
Next was my son Aleksi, who was diagnosed at 11 years old. I decided to become involved with JDRF when I came across a note that he wrote for a homework assignment. It said, “I cried all night… That night changed my life because I would be insulin-dependent forever.” At that moment, I promised myself that I would fight for him and for all children suffering from diabetes.
First, to give a voice to this misunderstood and little known illness. Second, to support and advance research. Today, my son is not cured. But he has a better life because treatments are improving. Yet there is still a lot of research ahead of us before we find a cure. This is why I am staying true to my commitment of over 14 years. And I am counting on your support.
